Support for end-weight as a determinant of linguistic variation and change

The term end-weight refers to the tendency for bulkier constituents to occur at the end of sentences. While end-weight has occasionally been analysed as a more general short-before-long principle in the sense of Behaghel's (1909–10) Law of Growing Constituents, the operation of end-weight in absolute sentence-final position has until recently lacked empirical verification. This article shows that end-weight effects can be observed in grammatical variation contexts in which language users have a choice between variants that differ in terms of length and degree of explicitness. El Santo Oficio de la Inquisición en Barcelona y soldados protestantes en el ejército de Cataluña

The case summaries sent to the central council of the Inquisition in Madrid by the tribunal in Barcelona show that a number of Protestant soldiers were in Spanish service in the second half of the seventeenth century. These soldiers were not persecuted by the Holy Office, but denounced themselves voluntarily in order to be allowed to convert to Catholicism. The majority of them were from German-speaking areas, and many came from within the Holy Roman Empire. The letters exchanged between Madrid and Barcelona show that this reflected a deliberate policy by the Inquisition of not trying soldiers in Spanish service, nor prisoners of war or deserters from the French army during this period.

The Significance of Treasure Hunting: Past and Present

It is certainly insufficient to explain treasure hunting as a reaction to poverty or a form of greed and avarice.1 Avarice has been seen as a part of the human condition and thus as a non-historical, that is, a quasi-anthropological constant. Anthropological constants hardly ever help to explain the behaviour of historical people. In our case, an alleged human tendency to accumulate material wealth does not explain why some people engaged in treasure hunting whereas others did not. Why did people look for treasure? Why did they talk about treasure? Why were they willing to suffer the repeated failure of treasure hunts and continue to look for hidden riches?

The literature on cardinals examined in this article (writings on conclaves, biographies, funeral orations and relations, as well as descriptions of funeral apparati) demonstrate an ostentatious prevalence of the “purple” on the “blood”, of the ecclesiastical nobility on the honour of the lineage, of the genealogy of the Church on that of the family trees. Such prevalence was of course rhetoric within a system that made the kinship relationships as its strength and had a noble social block behind itself. Remembering a past princess : Catherine Jagiellon and the construction of national narratives in Sweden and Finland

This chapter tackles the role a Jagiellonian princess, Catherine Jagiellon, has been given in Swedish and Finnish history culture. It illustrates how her figure has entered the historical-cultural memory of both countries, forging and re-forging their national self-image from the end of the sixteenth century through the Cold War, and into contemporary school history teaching. The chapter highlights the differences as well as the similarities of collective memory and history culture associated with Catherine Jagiellon in two Nordic countries with a shared history.
